Our Mission & vision

Appalachia Winds delivers dynamic performances encompassing the breadth of symphonic wind band repertoire while providing networking and music education opportunities for early-professional musicians across the Southeast.

Since 2019, Appalachia Winds, which started as “Appalachia: A Southeastern Wind Symphony,” strives to be recognized as one of the region's preeminent symphonic wind programs and essential contributor to our local arts community by:

  • Creatively pushing the boundaries of our medium through innovative, diverse, and inclusive programming

  • Providing opportunities for early-professional musicians to grow and develop as citizen artists

  • Partnering with local band programs to cultivate the next generation of wind musicians

  • Centering the needs of our membership and community as we build the infrastructure necessary to support our mission for years to come

Appalachia is primarily based in York County, South Carolina where we enjoy presenting musical programs in a variety of spaces, collaborating with local school music programs, and sharing in community-based music making.

Ensemble members not only have the chance to perform rewarding music and connect with peers, Appalachia also provides leadership opportunities through Section Leader roles and roles within our Musician’s Advisory Council. Additionally, beginning in summer, 2022, Appalachia began partnering with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra to create a “Wind Ensemble” summer camp for Knoxville area middle and high school students. Appalachia personnel lead rehearsals, sectionals, and lessons throughout the week, training up the next generation of musicians.

If you love wind band music, want to make connections with young musicians from other colleges across the south, and want to perform rigorous, rewarding music, we would love for you to join us! Email appalachiasws@gmail.com with your information and we will be in touch with future opportunities.
